چکیده

In this paper we review an approach to estimating the causal effect of a timevarying treatment on time to some event of interest. This approach is designed for the situation where the treatment may have been repeatedly adapted to patient characteristics, which themselves may also be time-dependent. In this situation the effect of the treatment cannot simply be estimated by conditioning on the patient characteristics, as these may themselves be indicators of the treatment effect. This so-called time-dependent confounding is typical in observational studies. We discuss a new class of failure time models, structural nested failure time models, which can be used to estimate the causal effect of a time-varying treatment, and present methods for estimating and testing the parameters of these models.

Structural accelerated failure time models for survival analysis in studies with time-varying treatments.

BACKGROUND In the absence of unmeasured confounding factors and model misspecification, standard methods for estimating the causal effect of time-varying treatments on survival are biased when (i) there exists a time-dependent risk factor for survival that also predicts subsequent treatment and (ii) past treatment history predicts subsequent risk factor level. In contrast, structural models pro...

Estimating Heterogeneous Causal Effects with Time-Varying Treatments and Time-Varying Effect Moderators: Structural Nested Mean Models and Regression-with-Residuals

Individuals differ in how they respond to a particular treatment or exposure, and social scientists are often interested in understanding how treatment effects are moderated by observed characteristics of individuals. Effect moderation occurs when individual covariates dampen or amplify the effect of some exposure. This article focuses on estimating moderated causal effects in longitudinal sett...

Comparison of time to the event and nonlinear regression models in the analysis of germination data

Extended abstract   Introduction: Numerous studies are being carried out to reveal the effects of different treatments on the germination of seeds from various plants. The most commonly used method of analysis is the nonlinear regression which estimates germination parameters. Although the nonlinear regression has been performed based on different models, some serious problems in its structure...

تورش روش‌های آنالیز استاندارد در برآورد اثرات علیتی

Standard methods for estimating exposure effects in longitudinal studies will result in biased estimates of the exposure effect in the presence of time-dependent confounders affected by past exposure.  In the present review article, we first described the assumptions required for estimating the causal effect in longitudinal studies and their structure regarding various types of exposure and ...

Statistical modelling of causal effects in continuous time

This article studies the estimation of the causal effect of a time-varying treatment on time-to-an-event or on some other continuously distributed outcome. The paper applies to the situation where treatment is repeatedly adapted to time-dependent patient characteristics. The treatment effect cannot be estimated by simply conditioning on these time-dependent patient characteristics, as they may ...
